Banner-making can be an ancient craft. Chapel banners commonly portray the saint to whom the cathedral is dedicated.
The term derives from French phrase “banni?re” and later Latin bandum, a towel out which a flag is manufactured (Latin: banderia, Italian: bandiera, Portuguese: bandeira, Spanish: bandera). The German vocabulary developed the term to mean the official edict or proclamation and since such written purchases often prohibited some type of individuals activity, bandum assumed this is of any ban, control, interdict or excommunication.
